Tropical System
Tropical Cyclones
Born in warm tropical waters north of New Zealand, cyclones occasionally track south to deliver intense rainfall, destructive winds, and dangerous swells to northern and central New Zealand. Ex-tropical cyclones retain their punch long after losing tropical status.
Convective
Thunderstorms & Lightning
Summertime thunderstorms develop rapidly over NZ’s ranges and coastal plains. They bring dangerous lightning, intense short-duration rainfall, hail, and localised flash flooding. Otago storms often form along the ranges before moving east to the coast.
Coastal
Coastal Storm Surge
Low-pressure systems draw the sea upward while onshore winds pile water against the coast. At Toko Mouth, storm surge from southerly swells can combine with Tokomairiro River flooding to create compound inundation events — a particular hazard at river mouth settlements.
Visibility
Radiation & Sea Fog
Radiation fog forms on calm, clear nights as the ground loses heat rapidly — common in the Tokomairiro plains in autumn and winter. Sea fog rolls in when moist maritime air moves over cold coastal waters, blanketing the South Otago coast and reducing visibility to near zero.
Wind
Nor’westers & Foehn Winds
As air descends from the Southern Alps, it compresses and warms — sometimes dramatically. Nor’westers bring hot, dry, gusty conditions to inland Otago and Canterbury, dramatically raising fire danger and creating uncomfortable living conditions. Wind speeds can exceed 100 km/h in exposed areas.
Cold
Frost & Black Ice
South Otago winters deliver regular ground frosts, with severe frosts possible inland. Black ice forms invisibly on roads and bridges during clear, calm nights — a silent hazard on the Clutha and Tokomairiro plains. Spring frosts after warm spells can devastate crops and gardens.
Rainfall
Atmospheric Rivers
Long, narrow corridors of concentrated moisture in the atmosphere can deliver extreme rainfall when they make landfall. New Zealand’s west coast bears the brunt, but when an atmospheric river aligns with the right wind direction, significant rainfall can extend far east — triggering floods, slips, and river surges across Otago.
